Prof Johannes Knoetze

Professor Johannes J. Knoetze received theological training at the University of Pretoria and obtained the following qualifications: BA Theology (1988), BD Theology (1991), and Doctoral Divinitatis (DD) in Missiology (2002). From 1992 to 2011, he was a full-time minister in the Dutch Reformed Church of Southern Africa DRCSA). In 2012, he was appointed as Senior Lecturer in the Department of Theology in the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences at the Mahikeng Campus of the North-West University (NWU). At the end of 2016, he was promoted to Associate Professor in the same department working in the Faculty of Theology at the NWU until August 2020. In September 2020, he joined the Faculty of Theology and Religion at the University of Pretoria as Associate Professor in Practical Theology and Mission Studies. He has published various articles in different accredited journals, as well as chapters in peer-reviewed books. His research focuses include missional diaconate in Africa, the millennial (emerging adults) population, and the alleviation of poverty. He acts as an external examiner for different universities, as well as a reviewer for international academic journals in his field of research. Knoetze is a member of the following associations: South African Missiological Society (SAMS), Society for Practical Theology in South Africa, International Association of Missiological Studies, World Reformed Fellowship, and International Society for the Research and Study of Diaconia and Christian Social Practice (ReDi). He also serves as a board member of NetACT (Network for African Congregational Theology) and as a member of the Moderamen of the General Synod of the DRCSA.
