What is Bullying?

What is it?

VERBAL (through words)
When one child calls another names or teases or berates him or her.

SOCIAL (by friends)
When one child ignores someone else on purpose, breaks up friendships, or gossips.

PHYSICAL (by hurting)
When one child shoves, pushes, or hits someone.

CYBER (cell phone or iPad)
When someone uses the internet or a cell phone or computer to hurt another person by spreading information.

Bullying is a very serious problem. It can happen at any time and in any place. It is not just another phase that children go through. It can hurt them physically (their bodies) as well as emotionally (their hearts).

A bully is someone who purposefully hurts others and who does it to the same person or group over and over again. Bullies use power to control others and in this way feel better about themselves. Children who are bullied are mostly too afraid to tell someone about it and very often they are bullied for a long time before it stops. If you know about someone who is bullied or if you are bullied, you can do something to stop it. Use your hand to help you remember it.

Walk away!
Bullies like choosing kids who seem quiet and lonely. Look straight at the bully and use a strong voice to tell him you do not like what he/she is doing. Then walk away and move closer to a group of people or friends.

Ignore the bully
Bullies want to upset their victims. Do not say anything. Walk away as fast as you can.

Ask the person to stop
If someone bullies you, hold up you hand and shout, as loudly as you can, “STOP!” or “LEAVE ME ALONE!” The bully will not like others seeing what he/she is doing.

Stay calm
Bullies don’t choose kids who look self-confident. Keep your head up straight, walk with your shoulders back and push out your chest. Breathe deeply when the bully approaches and stay calm.

Tell an adult
Talk to your parents, teachers, or an adult that you can trust. They will help you to handle the situation in the best way. It is the right thing
to do.

Deuteronomy 31:6
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.
