Ten Biblical principles of leadership

Being a Christian leader is not always easy. You have to guide people towards a loving relationship with Jesus Christ; but there are many challenges facing you and your congregation.

Sometimes these worries have to do with finances and the facilities you use. At other times it could be more personal; your selfish ambition could prevent you from serving the members of your church and putting their needs first. Also, social issues such as alcohol and drug abuse, gangsterism and violence against woman and children have become rife and affect many South African communities.

Given all this negativity it is easy to become discouraged. To lose the vision of what God expects from you as a leader. But if you want hope and understanding you should first seek God’s wisdom and his presence. Then you will find that the answers, strength and guidance you need are written within the pages of the Bible. In Hosea 4:6 the prophet writes: “My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.” If you are obedient to the Word of God your congregation will grow in love and understanding – despite difficult circumstances.

Ten Biblical principles of leadership on which to build your ministry:

Walk with God DAILY and study your BIBLE. PRAY more than ever before.

Never ever work alone. Build a TEAM. Identify the real leaders around you and invite them to join your ministry.

There is a difference between good ideas and GOD’s IDEAS. Take time to discern and develop a clear mental image on what God wants you to do. Also remember to CLARIFY the VISION with your team.

EXPOSE yourself and LISTEN to other ministers. Leaders LEARN from others.

MANAGE your RESOURCES very carefully. Protect standards.

SERVE your community. You must be the last one to benefit from your ministry.

Live with DISCIPLINE and discipline your members.

Be energetic and MOTIVATE and ENERGISE others constantly!

Live with INTEGRITY and CHARACTER. If you lose your integrity, you lose your leadership potential.

Prayer for a
Christian leader:

Dear Lord, I humble myself before you. It is the desire of my heart to be obedient to your Word and to be your faithful servant. I want to spread your message of healing and salvation despite the difficulties I face in my community and in my church. Help me to keep the focus on you Lord, and to always follow your example: to put the needs of others above my own and to live for your glory alone. Lord, transform me through the power of your Word and help me become the leader you intended me to be. Amen.
